Quik Talking to Source Mag about Gang Life
The evolution of DJ Quik took place in front of the eyes of millions of Hip Hop fans. Unlike many of today’s MCs, Quik came from an era where microphone fiends debuted and eventually matured in the public eye due to the longevity of their careers. There were one hit wonders, but the stars had staying power.
Quik was one of them.
The last 18 years watched Quik grow from a boy who glorified the gang lifestyle to a man who repudiated it. In a new interview that appeared on Rime Magazine, the critically acclaimed producer opened up about his past as gang member.
“This one,” he says of his 1995 effort, Safe and Sound, “I knew everything, I was working with everybody. I’m a little mad at myself for hating on gangbangers for stopping everybody. My ass, as a result starting gangbanging thinking that was going to make it better.”
However, the thought of losing his life caused Quik to look at things a little differently.
“When you get a glock put in your face and you know that somebody is going to pull the trigger and you know that mutha fuckin hollow point is about to take your nose off, that shit is some bullshit.”
“Joining the gang Tree Top Piru, that was the dumbest shit. I couldn’t enjoy movies. When Menace II Society came out, I was on the soundtrack. I was scared to death in the theater, like “I’ma get shot in the theater’.”

DJ Quik brings back his popular jam session style concert series Quiks Groove to the House of Blues in Los Angeles located on the Sunset Strip. The series will begin September 25th, 2009. Quiks Groove combines the elements of Hip-Hop, R&B, jazz & funk against a back drop of live music with the concert series becoming known for its intimate gathering of impromptu special guest stars. DJ Quik stated..
“This is my own musical play house. Quiks Grooves are special to me because they are not your typical DJ Quik show. Quiks Groove's give me a chance to be a fan of music again and invite out artists that I have admired and BlaQKout with them under the appreciation of musicianship and artistry. You will never see the same show twice and you never know who might show up. The new partnership with the House of Blues on the legendary Sunset Strip is sure to make each night one to remember.”
Last year, Quiks Groove sold out Los Angeles' own Key Club, as well as The Grove in Anaheim where Quik performed with a live symphony. Guests from past Quiks Grooves' include an array of Hip-Hop and R&B stars, including Xzibit, Ricky Bell (Bell Biv Devoe), Lady of Rage, Kurupt, Yo Yo, Jay Rock, Murs, Truth Hurts, Problem, Latoiya Williams, Dogg Pound and Raekwon. Quik's Groove and the House of Blues plan to announce new and exciting special guests to join the line up for the September 25th event.
Quiks Groove is tentatively scheduled to continue at the House of Blues Sunset Strip in December 2009, March 2010, and June 2010 with an all-star red carpet event to launch the series on September 25th.
